In the height of summer, sustained high temperatures pose severe challenges to open-air construction operations. Yet at the construction site of the Weifang–Suqian High-Speed Railway (Xuzhou Section) project undertaken by China Railway 12th Bureau Group, heat waves roll and machinery roars. Frontline builders brave the "roasting" test, stay focused on construction goals, and strictly uphold the bottom lines of safety and quality. Construction in this contract section mainly involves bridge and subgrade works, with complex procedures, high technical standards, and heavy construction tasks. Recently, temperatures above 35°C have occurred repeatedly, and multiple key procedures—including concrete curing, box girder prefabrication and erection, and subgrade filling—are constrained by high temperatures. Project construction faces dual pressure in terms of schedule advancement and work safety.

Facing the "major test" of extreme heat, China Railway 12th Bureau Group has implemented an operating mechanism of "off-peak construction and balancing work with rest," avoiding the midday high-temperature period and concentrating personnel and equipment to carry out construction during the cooler morning and evening hours. This efficiently advances key procedures such as pile foundation finalization, pier shaft construction, and subgrade trimming, maximizing construction efficiency. At the same time, high-temperature quality control requirements are strictly enforced, with routine operations including concrete temperature control, subgrade compaction testing, and structural safety inspections to prevent quality risks caused by high temperatures and ensure standardized construction.
As of now, the completion ratio of bridge pile foundations and pier shafts is close to 100%, laying a solid foundation for subsequent bridge deck erection. The overall completion of subgrade works exceeds 90%, with subgrade shaping, slope protection, and drainage system construction advancing simultaneously. Total box girder prefabrication across the line has exceeded 65%, all 204 box girders for the Xinyi South Grand Bridge have been prefabricated, and box girder erection has surpassed 54% of the designed total.
Accelerating progress makes safety even more important; fighting high temperatures makes protecting frontline workers even more important. The project department of China Railway 12th Bureau Group adheres to a people-oriented approach, having purchased more than 600 jin of watermelons in total and stockpiled heatstroke-prevention supplies such as mung beans, Huoxiang Zhengqi liquid, and cooling oil, comprehensively covering the cooling needs of the construction frontline. At the same time, it has innovatively created mobile heat-relief "water bars" and established a routine cooling service mechanism. Led by the on-site deputy manager, engineering commuter vehicles are dispatched at scheduled times each day to deliver iced mung bean soup, drinking water, heatstroke-prevention medicines, and other supplies to each construction point.
Next, the Project Department of Section 1 of the Weifang–Suqian High-Speed Railway (Xuzhou Section) undertaken by China Railway 12th Bureau Group will continue to keep a close focus on annual goals and key milestones, uphold the spirit of craftsmanship, go all out to sprint toward the annual construction tasks, and contribute infrastructure strength to the project's early opening to traffic and the promotion of coordinated regional development.
