In recent years, smart grids and photovoltaic power generation have developed rapidly. China's energy development has achieved remarkable results, energy-saving and emission-reduction projects have blossomed everywhere, the energy structure has been continuously optimized, and the "green" prospects of industrial transformation are promising.
The Implementation Plan for Large-Scale Equipment Renewal in Key Energy Fields issued recently mentions implementing actions for equipment renewal and technological transformation in the power generation, transmission and distribution fields, implementing actions for wind power and photovoltaic equipment renewal and efficient recycling, and implementing actions for standards upgrading, so as to accelerate the building of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system and cultivate and develop new quality productive forces.
The energy industry is moving toward "green," preserving a clean underpinning for high-quality economic development. The Opinions on Accelerating the Comprehensive Green Transformation of Economic and Social Development issued recently further sends the signal of accelerating the green transformation of economic and social development by taking the green and low-carbon energy transition as a lever.
"Adhering to the principle of establishing the new before abolishing the old, and promoting the safe, reliable and orderly replacement of fossil energy with non-fossil energy," "accelerating the construction of clean energy bases such as wind power and photovoltaic power in the northwest, hydropower in the southwest, offshore wind power, and coastal nuclear power," "strengthening the coordination and synergy of clean energy bases, regulating resources and power transmission channels in terms of scale and capacity, spatial layout, and construction pace"... It puts forward multiple requirements centering on strengthening the clean and efficient use of fossil energy, vigorously developing non-fossil energy, and accelerating the building of a new-type power system.
According to the latest data from the National Energy Administration, from 2013 to 2023, the share of coal consumption in China fell from 67.4% to 55.3%, a cumulative decrease of 12.1 percentage points; the share of non-fossil energy consumption such as wind power, solar power, hydropower, nuclear power and biomass increased from 10.2% to 17.9%, a cumulative increase of 7.7 percentage points. Profound changes have taken place in the ways energy is used in industry, transportation, buildings and people's daily lives. The quality of oil products has achieved a "three-step upgrade" from China III to China VI standards, making a positive contribution to the improvement of air quality. The world's largest charging infrastructure system has been built, and the "green content" of economic development has increased significantly.
In recent years, green industries have flourished, scientific and technological innovation has led the new track of the green economy, the energy supply structure has been continuously optimized, and the energy supply industry is sprouting "green" shoots.
In Baoji, Shaanxi, two energy stations that use medium- and deep-level geothermal water heat for heating have been put into use. Adopting a multi-energy complementary model of "maximized cascade utilization of geothermal energy + large-temperature-difference heat pump units + gas boilers for peak-shaving and supplementary heating," they provide winter heating services for local residents and achieve clean district heating; the cloud platform for smart dispatching, operation and management of a grid-load integrated virtual power plant built in Shenzhen, Guangdong, solves the four key problems of observability, measurability, controllability and availability in the access, dispatching and operation of massive load-side resources. In 2023, it regulated about 1.285 million kWh of electricity, directly reducing carbon emissions by about 1,074.3 tons; the Shengli Oilfield in Shandong has built core technologies for the entire industrial chain featuring "low consumption and high efficiency, large-scale transportation, increased oil output and reduced carbon, zero carbon emissions, recycling, and safe storage," achieving synergistic complementarity of economic, social and ecological benefits.
Industry experts say that the energy transition can provide basic element support for energy conservation, carbon reduction and green development in all industries, and is an important lever for promoting energy conservation and carbon reduction across society. It is necessary to make coordinated efforts in the "subtraction" of fossil energy and the "addition" of non-fossil energy, so as to create more favorable conditions for comprehensive energy conservation, carbon reduction and green transformation of the economy and society.
On the green track, multiple key energy-using scenarios such as industrial parks, production plants and ports are moving toward "green," releasing new momentum for the energy transition. In Hangzhou, Zhejiang, by replacing park enterprises' self-built air-conditioning systems and reducing the occupation of power distribution capacity resources, the local area has saved about 10% of comprehensive energy costs and, in coordination with the power grid, cut peak load by about 30%; in Xiamen, Fujian, through the "source-grid-load-storage" precise regulation technology, the park coordinates and regulates adjustable load resources such as HVAC, lighting and charging piles, providing load demand-side response of up to 20% of capacity; an automation enterprise in Nanjing, Jiangsu, relying on an independently controllable energy management platform and smart microgrid, has its green and smart energy use practices cover the entire production and operation process, reducing energy consumption by 8% and continuously improving economic benefits... In recent years, energy-saving and emission-reduction technologies have continuously made breakthroughs, and enterprise parks are "full of green."
"We will coordinate energy security and low-carbon transition, make coordinated efforts from both the supply and demand sides, and promote high-quality energy development," said a relevant official of the National Energy Administration. It is necessary to do a good job in the "subtraction" of energy conservation and carbon reduction on the consumption side, deeply implement the action of reducing and replacing fossil energy consumption, and strictly and reasonably control coal consumption; it is also necessary to do a good job in the "addition" of improving quality and expanding volume of non-fossil energy on the supply side, increase efforts to develop non-fossil energy, and comprehensively advance the development and utilization of clean energy such as nuclear power and hydropower.
Green energy is the development trend of future energy and meets the low-carbon and clean requirements of the energy transition. Industry experts say that the energy transition drives the intelligence and interconnection of energy, especially the power industry, and puts forward more technological innovation requirements for green energy. It is precisely because of the cumulative effect of sustained technological innovation in related fields that the global energy structure is developing in a lower-carbon and cleaner direction.
