I. Background of the City Expo 

The Shanghai International City and Architecture Expo (hereinafter referred to as the City Expo) has been successfully held for eight editions, becoming an international platform for promoting China's new urbanization achievements, a display platform for the achievements of Yangtze River Delta integration, an experience platform for Shanghai's urban construction and social governance level, and a high-end platform for promoting exchanges and cooperation among industries and enterprises.

The 2023 City Expo covers an exhibition area of 50,000 square meters across 3 halls, with more than 400 exhibitors. The theme is "Green, Low-Carbon Cities, Smart Transformation and Development," focusing on green, low-carbon and high-quality development, helping Shanghai advance the implementation of the "dual carbon" strategy, build an eco-smart city, coordinate urban digital construction with the harmonious coexistence of ecology and nature, and comprehensively demonstrate the core concepts, achievement displays and application demonstration cases of "people's cities built by the people, people's cities serving the people" in high-quality sustainable urban development, construction, operation and maintenance, and management. Through exhibitions and forums and other forms, it leverages whole-industry linkage, actively promoting green ecological urban areas and dual carbon goals, the construction of five new towns, urban infrastructure construction, urban renewal, refined urban management, digital transformation, ecological and environmental protection construction, safe construction, building industrialization and smart manufacturing, new energy development and application, urban planning and architectural design, characteristic towns and beautiful countryside construction, etc., comprehensively showcasing Shanghai's innovative construction and management achievements. Under the dual carbon strategy, it organically integrates green ecology with smart low-carbon, building a new pattern of sustainable development for eco-smart cities in digital transformation.

II. Introduction to the Theme Exhibition

It has become an international consensus that the 21st century is an era of sustainable development and high-quality development of underground space. As an important prerequisite for sustainable urban development, underground space is the frontline of urban disaster resilience. As of 2019, China's total urban construction land area was 5.8308 million hectares. Calculated at a 40% developable coefficient and a development depth of 50 meters, the reasonably developable underground space resources amount to 1,166.16 billion cubic meters. The new era requires the rational development and utilization of urban underground space, the building of resilient cities with high-level disaster prevention and mitigation, and the creation of "dual carbon" cities with low-carbon emissions in industry, buildings and transportation and strong ecological and artificial carbon sinks.

As an important display direction of this year's City Expo theme of "Resilience," the "Underground Space Engineering and Technology Exhibition" will systematically build the exhibition concept of "Green, Low-Carbon Cities, Smart Transformation and Development." It will focus on displaying advanced equipment for urban underground space planning and design, construction and testing, green and environmentally friendly materials, integrated utility tunnels and pipelines, underground space detection technology and equipment, and other content, covering the entire industry chain cycle from design, construction and operation and maintenance management, and centrally showcasing the upgrading of the four new technologies in the underground space industry. The exhibition links various parts of the Yangtze River Delta to exchange and share practical experiences and design inspiration in the development of underground space, provide reference experience for building low-carbon resilient cities, provide a theoretical basis for the rational planning and development of underground space development and utilization, and jointly promote the further improvement and development of the level of urban underground space development and utilization.
