China Deep Foundation Engineering Network News From July 26 to 28, experts, scholars, and engineering technicians from the field of foundation engineering across the country gathered in Beijing to participate in the Academic Conference on Foundations of the Architectural Society of China (2023). This year coincides with the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Architectural Society of China and the China Academy of Building Research Co., Ltd. As one of the important series of academic activities, the Academic Conference on Foundations of the Architectural Society of China (2023) provided an academic exchange platform for scientific and technological personnel in the field of building foundations in China.

This conference was hosted by the Foundation Branch of the Architectural Society of China, the Institute of Foundation Engineering of the China Academy of Building Research Co., Ltd., and Beijing Jinshan Foundation Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd.; it was organized by Jianyan Foundation Engineering Co., Ltd., Beijing Research Institute of Building Mechanization Co., Ltd., the State Key Laboratory of Building Safety and Environment, the National Engineering Research Center of Building Technology, the Disaster Prevention Research Center of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Beijing Engineering Technology Research Center for Renovation of Existing Buildings, and the Beijing Engineering Technology Research Center for Foundation and Underground Space Development and Utilization; it also received active co-organization and support from many units.

At the beginning of the conference, Vice Chairman Wang Cuikun of the Architectural Society of China delivered an opening speech. Wang Cuikun pointed out that this year is the first year for implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and the report of the 20th National Congress proposed building livable, resilient, and smart cities. It is necessary for us to deeply discuss the innovation and application of foundation technology and to find urban construction paths suited to China's national conditions. At the same time, a foundation achievement exhibition was also held.

Speaker of the Huang Xiling Foundation Engineering Forum (First Lecture): Honorary Chairman Teng Yanjing of the Foundation Branch of the Architectural Society of China

The speaker of the first Huang Xiling Foundation Engineering Forum was Teng Yanjing, Honorary Chairman of the Foundation Branch of the Architectural Society of China. His topic was "New Progress in Design Theory for Building Foundations." Honorary Chairman Teng Yanjing reviewed Academician Huang Xiling's academic thought, combined it with the new needs of the development of building foundation design theory, introduced the design theory and analysis methods for foundation structures considering the construction process, and pointed out the development direction of foundation design. Honorary Chairman Teng Yanjing believed that the basic principles of soil mechanics must be combined with engineering practice, the basic characteristics of foundation soil during the construction process must be considered and corresponding parameters obtained, and modern analytical methods must be adopted. The calculation models and analysis results must conform to the basic principles of soil mechanics. The report deeply inspired the conference delegates and pointed out the development direction of modern foundation design theory for the new generation.

The high-level summit dialogue on "Reflections on the Development Direction of Foundation Engineering in the Context of Intelligent Construction" discussed topics related to the development of intelligent equipment, digitalization of geotechnical engineering, green and low-carbon technologies, disaster prevention and mitigation and resilient cities, and talent cultivation under the new situation. Experts agreed that integrating intelligent, digital, big data, and other technologies with traditional geotechnical engineering investigation, design, construction, and testing, and visualizing the process control of geotechnical engineering, will make geotechnical engineering quality more controllable, make geotechnical engineering more efficient, safe, and reliable, and also save manpower. This is the development direction of geotechnical engineering.

Leading Experts Gather to Discuss New Progress in the Foundation Field

The reports covered a very wide range of fields, including traditional foundations, foundation pit support, pile foundations, and ground treatment, as well as the strengthening and renovation of existing buildings, anti-floating of underground structures, and seismic resistance of underground structures. Geographically, they covered the improvement of loess high fill and Xinjiang aeolian sand, as well as the engineering characteristics of coastal soft soil and coral sand. The high-level academic reports and discussions pointed out the direction for the discipline construction and scientific research of building foundations in China.

The foundation achievement exhibition presented the latest achievements in the foundation field in recent years, helping to support technological innovation, iterative industrial upgrading, and the development of new fields in foundation engineering.

Gathering Strength to Embark on a New Journey and Shouldering Missions with Courage

The 10th Council of the Foundation Branch of the Architectural Society of China was established in October 2018, and its term ended in 2023. During the conference, the Standing Council meeting and the full Council meeting were held.

At the full Council meeting, the meeting heard the "Work Report of the 10th Council," the "Report on Preparations for the 11th Council," the "Election Measures for the Council," the "Work Objectives of the 11th Council," and the "Five-Year Work Plan of the Foundation Branch of the Architectural Society of China." The 11th Council was elected. Gong Jianfei was elected Chairman; Wang Weidong, Wang Shuguang, Liu Songyu, Yang Min, Zhang Jianmin, Zhou Tonghe, Zheng Gang, Zheng Jianguo, Tang Mengxiong, and Kang Jingwen were elected Vice Chairmen; Ding Bing and 32 others were elected Standing Directors; Ding Xuanming and 115 others were elected Directors; and Wang Shuguang was elected Secretary-General.‍

Chairman Gong Jianfei required that the new Council perform its duties and responsibilities and have the courage to take responsibility. Under the leadership of the Architectural Society of China, focusing on the central work of various periods, it should continuously improve its organizational structure, regularly hold national academic annual meetings and council meetings and other academic exchange activities, actively carry out the compilation, revision, promotion, and training of standards and specifications, provide effective work for economic construction across the country, promote scientific and technological progress in building foundations in China, and lead the development direction of the discipline.

At the closing ceremony, Secretary-General Wang Shuguang of the Foundation Branch of the Architectural Society of China delivered a summary speech and announced that the next conference (2024) will be hosted by Zhengzhou University. Guo Yuancheng, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering of Zhengzhou University, delivered a speech on behalf of the organizer. He stated that as the organizer of the next conference, they will hold high the banner of the Foundation Branch of the Architectural Society of China, communicate and consult with the branch to ensure implementation, carefully provide conference services, and look forward to meeting everyone again in Henan next year.
