Lanzhou-Xinjiang High-Speed Railway Crosses Lanxi Expressway: Excavating Two Extra-Large Pile Caps Requires Driving 76 Pile Foundations with a Diameter of 1.5 Meters
Because the pile caps of the 45# and 46# main piers are exceptionally large, with dimensions of 26.6 × 23.6 × 4.0 meters, they each "cross-boundary invade" the existing highway slope by more than 3 meters. Excavating just these two pile caps alone requires driving 76 pile foundations with a diameter of 1.5 meters. According to data provided by the support department, the 45# pile cap, designed as an octagon and composed of 38 grouped piles, uses as much as 212 tons of steel reinforcement and 2,180 cubic meters of commercial concrete, making it the largest steel-reinforced concrete structure among all bridges on the entire Lanzhou-Xinjiang High-Speed Railway line. To avoid inducing deformation of the highway during foundation pit excavation, or even sudden sliding and collapse, the builders promptly adjusted the excavation plan. In addition to strictly following the design for construction, they also drove 30 anti-slide piles with a diameter of 1.1 meters and a depth of 17 meters at 3-meter intervals along the slope, once again reinforcing the 160-meter road section.
